Highest Points: The Best View in Every State

After going to our home state of Pennsylvania’s highest point, we felt inspired and thought it would be really cool to try to get to the high point of every state or country we go to thereafter.

So, once we hopped in the van, we started hitting as many as we could. We’ve documented all the ones we’ve been to so far and how to get to them.

Some states we were not able to get to due to closures or weather conditions, but we plan to hit them in the future when the opportunity rises again!

ALABAMA

Highest point in Alabama

Alabama’s highest point sits on Cheaha Mountain in Cheaha State Park located within the Talladega National Forest in the eastern region of the state. It has an elevation of 2,407 ft. and features a really cool viewing tower to observe the rolling hills below.

ARKANSAS

Highest point in Arkansas

Mount Magazine in Mount Magazine State Park is located just outside the town of Paris, Arkansas. While the technical highpoint is nothing more than a marker in the woods surrounded by trees, you can take in a beautiful view just in front of it at The Lodge at Mount Magazine. This high point stands at 2,753 ft.

DELAWARE

Highest point in Delaware

Delaware’s highest point is literally situated on the side of Ebright Road on a sign facing the street in a residential area. I ran out of the van while Jonlee drove slowly nearby because there was nowhere to park! The elevation sits at just under 448 ft.

FLORIDA

The highest point in Florida is Britton Hill standing at a whopping 345 ft making it the lowest high point in the country! It’s located in a cute roadside park with walking trails and a picnic/playground area.

GEORGIA

Highest point in Georgia

The highest point in Georgia is atop Brasstown Bald in the Blue Ridge Mountains located more specifically within the Chattahoochee National Forest. It stands at 4,784 ft and is one of my favorite high points/places in Georgia period. Park in the parking lot and hike a short but steep 0.6 mile trail to the top before sunrise for the best views – I promise it’ll be worth waking up early for! It literally took my breath away the first time I saw it.

INDIANA

Indiana’s high point is located at Hoosier Hill in a rural wooded area just off the side of the road. You can park and walk a short path to a mailbox with a book register and take in the cornfield views at a surprising 1,257 ft.

IOWA

Highest point in Iowa

This highpoint was one of the most memorable because it justĀ feels Midwestern. We loved traveling through Iowa and stopping at Hawkeye Point with an elevation of 1,607 ft was really fun. They have a restored barn with information inside and old farming equipment on display, as well as a “balcony” that you can climb and get a better view.

LOUISIANA

Highest point in Louisiana

This highpoint is on private land but is open to the public and located behind Mount Zion Presbyterian Church in Simsboro, LA. You can park in the church parking lot and walk a short trail to the high point plaque that sits at 535 ft.

MINNESOTA

Highest point in Minnesota

The highest point in Minnesota is atop Eagle Mountain in the Superior National Forest. Sitting at 2,301 ft, it’s located in the remote northeast corner of the state and requires a 7-mile hike – 3.5 in and 3.5 back. The actual highpoint is located just beyond the view in this photo in a shady wooded area.

MISSISSIPPI

Highest point in Mississippi

Woodall Mountain is 806 ft and not the most beautiful high point we’ve been to… there seemed to be quite a bit of construction or something going on when we visited and there isn’t much of a view. The marker is located at the top of what seems to be an unpaved service road.

MISSOURI

Highest point in Missouri

Missouri’s high point is located within the Ozarks on Taum Sauk Mountain and stands at 1,772 ft. The area has short walking trails, including one leading to a waterfall.

OHIO

Campbell Hill is the highest point in Ohio at 1,549 ft. Located in Bellefontaine, OH, this marker is situated behind a few office buildings and looks a bit out of place but you can park right up to it and enjoy the view.

PENNSYLVANIA

The highpoint that started it all – Mount Davis! Located in the southwestern region of the state, it stands at 3,213 ft and offers great views from the top of an old fire tower. This is where Jonlee and I first got the idea to visit every state’s high point during a mini road trip we took of Pennsylvania in 2021. I’m usually very scared of heights but this one didn’t bother me too much because the tower sits at tree level, so you don’t feel as high as you are.

TENNESSEE

Highest point in Tennessee

Located within Smoky Mountains National Park, the view from Clingmans Dome is one of the best I’ve ever seen! We absolutely love the Smoky Mountains and have been here many times. Take a short hike to the cement platform for the best 360-degree photos of the mountains. Some of my favorite pictures of all time have come from this very spot.

VIRGINIA

Highest point in Virginia

Virginia’s highest point is located on Mount Rogers in Grayson Highlands State Park. This highpoint is one of the more memorable ones because you have to take a 9-mile roundtrip hike on the Appalachian Trail to reach it at 5,729 ft. And, ironically, the technical highpoint is the least scenic spot on the whole trail. The best view is actually just before reaching the highpoint, as pictured here.

WEST VIRGINIA

Highest point in West Virginia

Spruce Knob is West Virginia’s highest point at 4,863 ft. Situated in the Monongahela National Forest, it offers stunning views of the Allegheny mountain range below. West Virginia quickly became one of our favorite states just based on the beautiful landscape everywhere you go.

WISCONSIN

This is the view from atop an old fire tower at the highest point in Wisconsin – Timm’s Hill. It sits at 1,951 ft. I had to pass on this one due to my fear of heights, but Jonlee was brave enough to get the photo!
