Located in Eldon, Iowa, the American Gothic house is the location of Grant Wood's inspiration for his iconic painting that changed not only his career, but the way Americans saw the Midwest. Grant originally came up with the idea to paint what was meant to be a father and daughter living on a farm after his move to Iowa, where he was amused by the culture. 🇺🇲Earlier in his career, he was moreso inspired by European art but felt that America needed to start creating it's own representation in art. And so, out of love for the Midwest, American Gothic was born. ⛪️The term "American Gothic" simply comes from the architecture of the home that, at the time, represented "Carpenter Gothic". The man and woman depicted in the painting were actually Grant's sister, Nan, and his dentist, Dr. Byron McKeeby. Nan and Dr. McKeeby had never actually met prior to the painting being completed and only knew they were both in the painting at all once it became famous and they started getting recognized! Word has it, Dr. McKeeby was not happy about this. 💵Grant was 39 years old when American Gothic won him a bronze medal and a whopping $300 prize (about $5,700 today). This might have been enough to get him out of his living situation - an attic above a funeral home carriage house with his mom and sister... Grant enjoyed creating ambiguous art where the observer could interpret it in many different ways. He was often known to not be able to explain his own art. Either way, Grant made a name for himself with this one and the original painting resides in the Art Institute of Chicago, where it's been since its purchase in 1930. 🎉The American Gothic house is FREE to visit and if you're traveling through the Midwest, I HIGHLY recommend you visit this quirky, iconic place! 🏠There's a visitor center on site with a small museum that shows a film and sells books and miscellaneous souvenirs.
